Aid for Friends

A program to provide meals for the isolated sick and homebound. Fill trays (available at the entrances to the church) with a balanced meal (usually leftovers from dinner).  Place the trays in the freezer on the back porch of the Rectory.  Volunteers are also needed to deliver these meals.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
This group is not a parish organization, however, it does meet in our Parish Center on Tuesday evenings. The purpose of the group is to offer support to those dealing with the problems of alcohol addiction.

Altar Guild

Volunteers from the Parish who give one hour a week on a rotating basis.  They take care of the altar linens, vestments, and light cleaning of the sanctuary.

Altar Servers

This ministry is open to boys and girls in grades 4 through 12.  Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass and at other liturgies.  Masses are assigned on a rotating basis, approximately twice per month.

Blood Drive

St. Matthias Parish hosts the American Red Cross Blood Drive in the spring and fall of each year.  Volunteers, on an as-needed basis, are needed to make telephone calls, send correspondence, and register people on the day of the Blood Drive.

Buildings Committee

The committee advises the Pastor and Pastoral Council on renovations, repairs, restorations and preventative measures required for our Parish Church, Rectory, Convent and Parish Center.

Catholic Charities Appeal

Volunteers are needed to assist in publicizing the annual Catholic Charities Appeal, which assists the poor and those in need in our Archdiocese.

CYO
(In conjunction with other parishes of cluster 70) Provides athletic activities for our young people. Adults coach, encourage and support our youth.

Counters

A team of people who count and sort the collection after Mass on Sunday mornings.  Counters are assigned on a rotating basis, approximately once every other month.

Directory Committee
Prepares the annual parish directory which consists of a listing of all our parish family members, as well as advertisers who wish to present products or services to our Parish members.

Eucharistic Adoration

The Parish has Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. during the school year, followed by recitation of the Rosary (Stations of the Cross during Lent) and concluding with Benediction.  Parishioners are urged to sign up for adoration times.

Evangelization Committee

Garden Club

Greeters

The Highlanders

This group gives Parishioners, aged 55+, a forum for friendship, fellowship and support.  Activities include socials, quilting and knitting classes and groups, playing board games and cards, and most of all ... having FUN!  The Highlanders meet on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. in the Parish Center.

Homecoming Committee

H.O.P.E. Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist our elderly, sick and homebound Parishioners with rides to doctor appointments, banks & stores.  Non-driving phone captains are also needed.  Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis.

Lectors

Readers who proclaim Sacred Scripture at Mass and other liturgies.  Masses are assigned on a rotating basis, approximately once or twice per month.

Liturgy Committee
This committee, composed of Parishioners active in the liturgical ministries, strives to implement the liturgical directives of the Church in our Parish, as well as aids in their application to the existing dynamics of Sunday, Holyday liturgy and other liturgical celebrations throughout the year.

Ministers of Holy Communion

Appointed by the Cardinal to serve for 3 years, these ministers assist the Parish priests with the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass, and bring the Eucharist to the sick, homebound, as well as those in area nursing homes.  Masses are assigned on a rotating basis, approximately twice per month.

Music Ministry

This ministry includes Cantors, Choir Members and Instrumentalists.  Cantors are assigned on a rotating basis.  The choir rehearses Thursday evenings and sings approximately twice a month at the 10:30 a.m. Mass and at other special liturgies from September to May.  Music reading knowledge is helpful, but not required.  Parishioners who play instruments are also encouraged to share their talents.

P.R.E.P.
(Parish Religious Education Program)

The primary religious education program for children who do not attend Catholic schools.  Classes are held on Sunday mornings from September to May.

 R.C.I.A.
(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the program through which non-Catholic people prepare to join the Catholic Church after a period of inquiry, instruction, sharing faith and life experiences and conversion.  The group meets throughout the year one evening a week.

Rectory Helpers

Assist with light office work in the Rectory.  Flexible hours on an as-needed basis.

Saint John’s Hospice

Donations of casseroles are collected in the Parish Gym on the 3rd Monday of each month.  St. John’s Hospice, located at 1221 Race St., Philadelphia, is operated by the Archdiocese to help inner-city homeless men with food, shelter, counseling & health problems.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society

The Society has clothing drives approximately twice a year at Saint Matthias.  Large items may be donated by calling 215-288-8160 for pick-up.

Senior Servers

These men and women, aged 55+, volunteer their time during the week and on Saturdays to act as altar servers at Funeral Masses.  They also serve at other Masses on an as-needed basis.

Welcoming Committee

This committee calls and welcomes new families who register as Parishioners at Saint Matthias Parish.  They answer questions about the Parish, and provide a personal contact for these new members of our Parish family.
